May 2013 Meeting Details

Our meeting for the month of May will be on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at the Milhopper Branch Library, Meeting Room A at 7:00pm. We have some fun things planned!

1) As usual bring in your current WIP (works in progress) or finished projects for show-n-tell.

2) You DO NOT need your sewing machine/supplies for this meeting. {We are planning a fun workshop for June's meeting so we'll ask you to bring it then.}

3) Eileen has offered to demo a very popular quilting ruler - Hex N More Ruler by Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts.  Be sure to attend the meeting to see the ruler live in action and learn more about it including where you can purchase one for yourself if interested.

To see some example of projects that can be created with the Hex N More ruler click HERE.

Let's have some quilty fun! If you would like to participate in this swap here are the details:

1. Bring a small UFO (unfinished object or project) that you can't or don't want to finish.
2. You will swap UFOs with another member.
3. Each member will then have the choice to continue, reinterpret or repurpose the UFO into a finished project and return it back to the original owner at next month's (June) meeting.

*Note: Try to choose a small UFO so that we will be able to do something with it before our June meeting. Some ideas include: an extra {lonely} quilt block, small paper piecing project, a mini quilt, scrap project, etc.*

This is sure to be a lot of fun so I hope you will join in!   See you on Wednesday!

Call for Quilts- Deadline this week!

Just thought I would pass this along in case any of you were interested. There are only a few days left for the deadline but that is still plenty of time since the first step is just a photo submission for consideration.

International Quilt Festival will feature quilts in a special exhibit, The Modern Quilt Guild Showcase.

This exhibit will premiere at International Quilt Market and Festival, October 31-November 3, 2013. They would also like to retain the quilts for possible exhibit at our spring and summer editions of Festival.

Members from any of the Modern Quilt Guilds around the world are invited to be considered for inclusion in the new exhibit.

You may submit a total of two (2) quilts for our consideration. We require that quilts be at least 36” on each side.
• There is no maximum size limit.
• There is no "made after" date requirement.
• Completed submissions with visuals must be received online by April 26, 2013.
• You will be notified no later than May 24, 2013, regarding the quilts to be included in this exhibit along with shipping instructions.
• If selected, the quilts will need to arrive in Houston no later than August 30, 2013.
• Quilts will be returned by the end of November 2013 if the quilt does not travel, or arrangements may be made to have a quilt picked up at the conclusion of the show.
• If you agree to allow your quilt to travel (assuming the exhibit is chosen to travel to other shows), your quilt will be returned by the end of August 2014.

There are some specific instructions that must be followed as it relates to the images of the quilt(s) you are submitting for consideration. Please CLICK HERE for all those details to make sure you do it correctly.

If you are considering submitting one (or more) of your modern quilts for consideration in this exhibit CLICK HERE for a sample registration form just so you can see what is required of you for meeting the submission deadline this Friday, April 26, 2013 at midnight CDT. It's not that much and you still have plenty of time to get those submissions in!

Good luck!

First meeting of 2013- Challenge time!

I hope you enjoyed the holidays and were able to spend at least some time quilting! I was able to get a few things done myself. Now, it's time to kick off the new year with some quilty fun!

Our first meeting of the new year is this Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7pm at Milhopper Branch Library. I'll be handing out some fabric (fat eighths) for our new challenge and I hope you can make it. The challenge theme is "Storybook." We'll all take some kind of storybook inspiration (anything you want) and create a quilt (any size) using Madrona Road by Violet Craft for Michael Miller fabric. The only other fabrics you can use in the quilt are solid colors and/or more Madrona Road fabric that you buy on your own. We will be working with the Ocean Palette of the fabric line but you can any fabrics from the line you want.

Here are a few online shops selling Madrona Road fabric:
Hawthorne Threads
