Sew Day - July 27

All members are welcome to a the Gainesville Modern Quilters Sew Day on July 27 at JoAnn Fabrics (Butler Plaza) from 10 am to 6 pm. We have reserved JoAnn's classroom for the event.

We will be making the Lattice Bones quilt by Julie Hirt as published on the Moda Bake Shop. Please refer to the pattern here.

This pattern utilizes pre-cut fabric (jelly rolls). However, if you chose to use yardage, please see my blog post about cutting and piecing to get you started. There isn't alot of room to cut fabric in the JoAnn's classroom, so you might want to get this prep work done at home and then just spend the day sewing.

If you are newer quilter, there will be experienced quilters on hand to help you. I have personally pre-tested the pattern and I think the quilts will be awesome.

These quilts are yours to do what you want with. It is not a charity project. If you want to work on something else, please feel free to bring any UFO you want to work on. This event is designed to build camaraderie, encouragement and to explore modern quilting. Please post comments if you have any questions or comments.

Gainesville Modern Quilt Guild Bylaws and Membership--Please read and comment!

The bylaws for Gainesville Modern Quilters are now posted to the website here. If you plan to become a dues paying member of the guild, please read the bylaws and then add a comment to this post indicating if you approve of the bylaws as they are written and confirming that you would like to become a member. We will have an opportunity to revise the bylaws each year, so we can adjust as we grow and learn what works for us as a guild.

For this first year, we are collecting dues later in the year than outlined in the bylaws. Our goal is to complete all the steps for becoming a member of the national guild before June 1. In order to accomplish this, we will begin collecting dues at the next meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7. We will announce the amount prior to the meeting.

We are making great progress toward becoming a local chapter of the Modern Quilt Guild and are really excited to take the next big step of making our membership official!

Fabrics-Store contest

Hi Fellow GMQ members!

I entered this contest on the Fabrics Store website and would love to have your vote! (Click on View all in the Home Decor category; my entry is a linen baby quilt--modern, of course.) If I win, I would gladly donate (most of) the store credit to the group for our proposed craft fair projects. If you haven't discovered Fabrics Store's linens, they are really wonderful and (I think) reasonably priced.

Modern color theory mini workshop, March 5

At the next meeting, Wednesday, March 5, I will be giving a mini-workshop on modern color theory based on the book Interaction of Color by Josef Albers. The supplies you'll need to participate are solid fabrics in the following sizes: large rectangles of various colors (measuring about 4x6 inches) and two small squares (2x2 inches) of the same color. It would be great if you can bring several pairs of small squares. I'll also bring some extras but you will probably want to work with colors you have on hand.

You can read a little about Albers' color theory here: Josef Albers

There is also an app for iPads that looks super cool: Interaction of Color app

March 2014 Meeting details

Oue next meeting is Wednesday, March 5th and we will be meeting at the Milhopper Branch Library in Gainesville.  Please note that we will meet in the children's area of the library instead of our usual meeting room.  There are tables and chairs there so we will be busy. Be sure to read this entire post because we have a lot of going on!

1) Mug Rug Swap- At our last meeting we decided to have a small (but still fun!) mug rug swap for March 2014.  If you don't know what a mug rug is it's basically a mix between a drink coaster and a placemat. It's just the right size to fit your mug and a snack on while at your work desk.  If you need ideas or inspiration just click HERE.

{Click on the picture below for more ideas. Pinterest has a zillion mug rugs for you to get inspiration from!}

We encourage you to participate! It will be so much fun!

Here are the details:
• Mug rug should be no smaller than 4" x 6" and no larger than 6" x 10"
• Use any fabrics you want, any theme-- try to incorporate at least one modern quilting element (negative space, use of solids, bold prints, geometric or abstract shapes, etc.)
• Must be bound with some type of a quilt binding.
• We will swap them when we get to the meeting so you do not have a set swap partner. Just make something you would like to receive!

2) Color Theory for Modern Quilters Workshop by Brigit-
After our mug rug swap we will participate in a fun little activity on color theory for modern quilters. Our very own Brigit is going to walk us through the exercise. More details on what supplies you should bring will be included in another post later this week. But come ready to have fun and learn a little more about using color in your modern quilts!

3) Voting of Guild Officers- As you know we are finally getting the ball rolling on being a formal part of the Modern Quilt Guild. One of the first things we need to do is establish an executive board for the guild.  We will be voting at the March meeting. So, look out for another email post with a nomination document included and more details. If you plan to be a paying member of the guild as we move forward in this process please come to the March meeting to help us vote in our new (and first!) executive board.  More details to follow in another post this week.

Exciting things are in the works for Gainesville Modern Quilters and we need your help to make it all happen! Thanks for your support and see you in March!
